Dental Implants 101

Dental implants are small posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone. They mimic a tooth’s root and fuse with the jawbone. Once the implants are in place, they provide a stable foundation for a tooth restoration to connect to.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Implants are a popular tooth replacement method among patients and dentists alike. Some of their many benefits include:

  • They’re a permanent solution for tooth replacement.
  • The implant and the tooth restoration look, feel, and function like a natural tooth.
  • Implants don’t need additional maintenance. You can brush and floss them as you would your other teeth.
  • Implants help preserve your facial shape and prevent your cheeks and lips from appearing sunken.
  • The implant posts stimulate the jawbone and help prevent bone loss.

Implant Restorations

Single Tooth Implant

Dental crowns are utilized for single tooth replacement. With the help of an abutment (connective piece) they can attach to a single implant. Crowns can replace one tooth or many teeth if the missing teeth are spread apart.

Implant-Supported Bridge

Implant-supported bridges connect to two dental implants and have natural-looking teeth in the middle to fit perfectly in the space left behind. Bridges can replace a single tooth or multiple teeth in a row.

Implant-Supported Denture

We use four to eight implants to stabilize a denture. The denture simply snaps onto the implants for a secure fit. Patients can eat and talk without worrying about their denture slipping.

Dental Implant FAQs

What is the dental implant process?

At Prestige Family Dentistry, we start the implant process by having a one-on-one consultation where we answer any questions and determine if you are the right candidate for dental implants.

If we find that you can benefit from dental implants, we will have you come back for another appointment to insert the implant post. After the post heals for 2-3 weeks, you will come back for your final appointment where the crown will be placed on the implant post, leaving you with a natural-looking, full smile.

Are dental implants permanent?

The success rate of dental implants is extremely high at 95%. They are considered the most long-lasting solution to missing teeth. If well taken care of, your dental implant can last upwards of 15-20 years!

To ensure the longevity of your dental implant, be sure to treat them just like your natural teeth. Brushing and flossing the implant site can help ensure the gums, teeth, and jaw stay healthy and reduce the risk of infection. If you have any questions about the longevity of your dental implant, call our office today!

Do dental implants look natural?

At Prestige Family Dentistry, we do our best to give you the most natural-looking result. We carefully match the color of your tooth to your implant before placing it in your mouth. However, the porcelain material used to make the implant is virtually stain resistant. You may notice that the teeth surrounding your implant can look slightly darker than the implant itself. If you do experience yellowing of your natural teeth, call our office and learn about our whitening services!
